AGM

The club held its Annual General Meeting on April 11th. As the terminal building was under construction, the AGM was held off site. Thanks to club member Steve Bell for offering the use of his workplace.

The board room at Linear Transfer Automation Inc was filled to capacity. Members of the Board gave their reports including the Financial Report for the fiscal year ending March 31st and the status of CMQ. In addition to looking back at the year that was, President Fred Simpson offered up his views on where the club is heading over the next number of years. Our PRM, Tom Stiff, then spoke to a topic dear to all the flying members; possible upgrades to CMQ. Tom and others may have images of glass panels dancing in their heads but Treasurer Paul Richardson encouraged everyone to keep their heads out of the clouds. Notwithstanding that if we upgraded to glass we could legally have our heads in the clouds, more modest upgrades are more realistic. Stay tuned for further developments on this front.

As only seven people stood for election to the new Board of Directors, they were all acclaimed. Six were incumbents with one new face on this year's board:

  • Peter Lubig
  • Paul Richardson
  • Sam Sciscione (new this year)
  • Fred Simpson
  • Owen Sneath
  • Tom Stiff
  • Randy Vanness

Annual Dues

Club dues were payable by April 30th and remained unchanged from last year at $300 for flying members & $50 for social members. If you have not paid your dues then you are behind the eight ball as your account is in arrears. Flying members will not be able to access the online booking system unless they are paid up so please get those dues in ASAP. You can mail a cheque to:

Membership record

All members should also review their membership info to ensure that it is up to date. It is particularly important that flying members update their hours flown as this has an impact on our insurance.

A busy two months

The engine overhaul was completed on 1 March with CMQ being returned to service on March 15th following 2 weeks of initial break-in flights. In total, CMQ logged 90 hours during March & April.

Open for business

If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring? At Edenvale Aerodrome they bring the Fud Grill.

As previously mentioned, the terminal building was closed for renovations throughout April. April has come and gone and so have the contractors. The Fud Grill (pronounced FOOD Grill) is currently open for breakfast and lunch (08:30 - 3:00 pm) seven days a week. And come May 14th, they will be open for dinner as well from Wednesday through Sunday.

Be sure to stop in and say hi to proprietor Regan Gorman, his general manager, Scott and the rest of the staff at Fud Grill.

May Meeting

Ted BarrisOur May meeting will be back at Edenvale, at the newly renovated restaurant.

On May 20th we will be hosting, author, journalist and broadcaster Ted Barris the author of Behind the Glory: The Plan that Won the Allied Air War which details the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan.

This promises to be another exciting evening and you can also check out the new restaurant.

New Toronto area charts

Nav Canada has published new charts for the Toronto area. Updated Toronto VTA (Air 1900) & Toronto VNC (Air 5000) were both published in April; however, an error was made in the Toronto VNC (Air 5000). As per NOTAM 100247 CZYZ TORONTO FIR:

CZYZ TORONTO VNC (AIR 5000) 28TH EDITION: N SIDE: AIRSPACE HAS BEEN ERRONEOUSLY PRINTED DRG THE PRODUCTION PROCESS. PILOTS ARE TO USE THE S SIDE OF THE VNC WHEN OPR WITHIN 65 NM OF THE TORONTO VOR/DME(YYZ).

At this point, we don't know when Nav Canada plans on issuing a revised chart.

G8 and G20 Flight Restrictions

Information has been released by the security authorities concerning the G8 and G20 meetings of world leaders in June. An Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) Supplement has been released by Nav Canada. Please check this official source and be sure to check NOTAMs before you fly for any updates that may occur due to changing threat levels.

The G8 restrictions will be in place June 24, 25 and 26, are centered on the Deerhurst Resort, near Huntsville ON. The G20 restrictions will be in place June 26, 27 and 28. They are centered on YYZ VORTAC 097 radial @ 5.2 NM

At both locations the restricted areas will consist of two rings, both from the ground up to 18,000 feet. Within 15 nm there will be no GA flights permitted. From 15 to 30 nm, special procedures will permit flights to and from arrival and departure airports and direct point-to point flights in this area.

As well as being familiar with the procedures outlined in AIP Supplement 11/10 and any applicable NOTAMs, all pilots should review the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS), Section F—Emergency Procedures—Interception of Civil Aircraft to ensure they know and understand their responsibilities if intercepted.

Getting Hold of London Radio

As you may already know, Nav Canada is redesigning the Remote Communications Outlet (RCO) system to improve en route communications and information services to pilots.

A Remote Communications Outlet (RCO) uses VHF transmitters/receivers to provide a remote communications link between pilots and Air Traffic Services (ATS) facilities. Flight service specialists at Flight Information Centre (FIC) facilities use the RCOs to communicate with pilots and provide Flight Information Service En route (FISE).

This use to be provided on 126.7 MHz but due to frequency congestion, Nav Canada has divided this service across five separate frequencies. To help you sort out which frequency to use, they have a map of the country on their website detailing which frequency to use where. If your interests are more local, you can download a PDF (200 KB) of Ontario.

In the vicinity of Edenvale, the RCO frequency is 123.375.

These are the frequencies that you will use to contact London Radio to open/close your flight plan, get weather or give a position report or a PIREP. For the most part, London Radio is no longer monitoring 126.7. Pilots should still monitor 126.7 MHz when in uncontrolled airspace and broadcast their position and intentions on this frequency in order to co-ordinate their flight with other aircraft.
