Club Meeting

crosscanadaflightlogo1.gifThe first meeting of 2010 will be on Thursday January 21st at 7pm and will be a movie night.

If you missed it on Global TV on January 2nd, this is your chance to see the documentary on last year's Cross Canada Flight.  This one-hour special is a tribute to the aviators and aircraft that came together in the celebration of 100 years of powered flight in Canada by flying from Vancouver, BC to Baddeck NS.

Christmas Party

It was a packed house for the club's Christmas party, held way back on December 5th.  Catered by the Edenvale Café, we were treated to a sumptuous turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

Tom filled in for that jolly old elf by handing out a free ball cap to every member and Cathy Alton took home a pretty sweet 25/75 draw.  Nope, that wasn't a misprint.  In lieu of our regular 50/50 we went with a 25/75 being Christmas and all.

Engine Overhaul

Led by AME Robert Horne, we removed the engine from CMQ on the evenings of Friday & Saturday December 11th & 12th.

Leavens Aviation picked the engine up the following Monday to commence the overhaul. As part of the overhaul, they will be overhauling the starter, installing a new vacuum pump, new lifters & cams, new cylinders, new spark plugs & ignition harness, new magnetos and new Lord mounts.  The carburetor and air box are also being overhauled.  The muffler showed signs of wear so it has been sent out for repair as well.

As is often the case, getting hold of parts is determining the pace of repairs.  The lifters are in short supply and may slow repairs down somewhat.  We could have elected to have the lifters overhauled instead of replaced, but thought it best to take the time to do the job right.

Our PRM, Tom, has been keeping in touch with Leavens throughout the overhaul.  At last report, we expect to have the engine back in our hands sometime next week.  Once we have it back at Edenvale, it will take several days to re-install it.  Updates will be posted to the website as they become available.

Effective ATS-Pilot Communication

A Joint Project of the Air Traffic Services-Pilot Communications Working Group

Voice communication between pilots and ATS personnel is a critical safety link in the Air Traffic Services (ATS) system. As part of the effort to increase awareness of the risks associated with non-standard communication, the Air Traffic Services-Pilot Communications Working Group has developed an awareness campaign called First Defence.

Looking for more to do?

NASA offers a website that contains free icing training courses and resources for pilots who want to learn more about aircraft icing and what they can do about it.

A Pilots Guide to Icing
A course primarily intended for pilots who make their own operational de-icing and anti-icing decisions. This includes private pilots as well as those who fly business, corporate, air taxi, or freight operations in fixed-wing aircraft.

A Pilot's Guide to In-Flight Icing
A course primarily intended for pilots who fly aircraft certified for flight into icing. With an operational focus, this course provides tools pilots can use to deal with in-flight icing.
